Where Form Yields to Velocity

**Artist Biography:Marwen Wafi**

I am a self-taught fine art photographer based in Tunisia. In my practice, I reject traditional documentary conventions in favor of absolute aesthetic freedom. Focusing on the unstyled momentum of Mediterranean coastal life, I create moody, minimalist compositions shaped by silhouette and abstraction. I rely on Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) not merely as a technique, but as an act of visual rebellion, dragging the shutter to deliberately dissolve the physical human form into kinetic velocity. Recognized with two winning entries in the Experimental Lab category at the Huawei XMAGE Awards 2025, my cinematic studies of motion and light invite viewers to confront the profound beauty of the everyday.

**Project: Where Form Yields to Velocity**

In an era of relentless visual acceleration and algorithmic perfection, images are rapidly consumed and instantly forgotten. "Where Form Yields to Velocity" is an intentional visual rebellion against this numbness. Shot along the coastal infrastructure of Bizerte, Tunisia, this seven-image sequence documents a deeply ingrained summer local ritual: the unstyled momentum of youth claiming public space for recreation and release.

Captured across the atmospheric light of golden hour, sunset, and blue hour, the project refuses the passive, clinical clarity of standard documentary photography. Instead, it utilizes in-camera Intentional Camera Movement (ICM) as an active conceptual language, dragging the shutter to dissolve the physical body into pure kinetic energy, light, and sea.

The narrative of creation relies on precise physical synchronization. Executed using a Leica Leitzphone powered by Xiaomi (Xiaomi 17 Ultra Leica edition) paired with the Photography Kit Pro grip, this process treats the mobile digital sensor as a dynamic canvas. To drag the shutter in the harsh coastal sun without overexposing the surrounding splashes, I employ K&F Concept variable ND filters to achieve precise exposure times ranging from 1/30 to 1/15 of a second. By anticipating the exact trajectory of the divers, I use slow-shutter panning and rotational movements to match their momentum mid-air. Post-production in Adobe Lightroom Mobile is restricted strictly to tonal and contrast refinement, ensuring the surreal distortion remains a purely authentic, in-camera capture of physical velocity.

This is not a romanticized postcard of North African shores, nor a safe, static aesthetic study. It is a frame-by-frame deconstruction of gravity, bodily autonomy, and liberation. The narrative progresses meticulously from grounded muscular tension into the chaotic clash of acrobatic flight, before dragging the viewer directly into the vertigo of the fall. Ultimately, the subject is swallowed by streaks of fading ambient light and textured water. The deliberate motion blur operates as a metaphor for shedding terrestrial identity; suspended in the air and water, these youth are no longer bound by societal expectations. By balancing poetic minimalism with raw athletic urgency, the work forms a quiet but forceful rupture in the modern media stream.
